Musculoskeletal therapy is natural progression from remedial massage therapy. Musculoskeletal therapy is a combination of all of the skills that are found in Remedial Massage and includes some new ones. Remedial massage therapy typically includes; trigger point therapy, myofascial release, deep tissue massage, swedish or relaxation massage, stretching, proprioceptive stretching, postural and orthopedic assessment, strengthening and postural exercise.
Musculoskeletal therapy includes all of these skills but also includes the additional skills of joint mobilisation, myofascial dry needling, myofascial cupping, strength and cardiovascular conditioning, further studies into pathology, western diagnostic methods including imaging and blood analysis, clinical examination, and basic prinicples in counselling and psychology. Graduates will have completed a minumum of a three year degree including extensive supervised clinical hours.
In Queensland the graduates of Musculoskeletal Therapy are regularly working with all of the high profile elite sporting teams in Brisbane and beyond. In the field of sports massage, Musculoskeletal therapy is fast becoming the new standard.
In the field of conservative injury management (non-surgical treatment) musculoskeletal therapy offers a new option the is based in manual therapy techniques and a strong scientific background with a respect for the individual and the person as a whole.
A typical treatment will involve an introductory history taking where the therapist will determine the aims and needs of the client, a physical assessment where information will be obtained and recorded to measure progress, and the treatment will be based around the information obtained during the assessment. This is one of the differences between a massage therapist and a musculoskeletal therapist, while a musculoskeletal therapist can choose relaxation massage, if that is what is most appropriate for the client, they also have a large option of technical, evidence based, therapeutic options, that have proven to be safe and effective.
